Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD),

   Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD), which was established in October 1949 following the founding of the People's Republic of China, is a large-scale state-owned architectural design and consulting institute. BIAD's businesses include city planning, investment planning, large-scale public architectural design, civil architectural design, interior decoration design, landscape design, engineering design of intelligent system for buildings, approximate estimate and budget making of project, project supervision, and project contracting.

  With the social development of China, BIAD has undertaken the design works for a large number of major projects in the capital city of Beijing, among which are the symbolic buildings constructed during the 50s that represented the image of new China, such as the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum , the Cultural Palace of the Nationalities, and the Worker's Stadium; projects in the 60s and 70s that reflected the independent scientific and technological strength of China, such as Beijing Worker's Gymnasium, the Capital Stadium and Beijing Hotel; projects in the 80s that displayed China's achievements in its reform and opening-up process, such as China International Exhibition Center and the gymnasiums and stadiums for the 11 th Asian Games; and projects carried out in the 90s that improved Beijing's functions as an international metropolis, such as Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 2, Beijing West Railway Station, the Conservatory of Beijing Botanical Garden, the Capital Library and Xidan Cultural Square. Now in the 21 st century, BIAD is dedicating itself to some of the architectural projects for the 2008 Olympic Games and a number of landmark buildings in Beijing , including Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3 and the office building of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

   In recent years, BIAD has also completed the design works for a lot of city landmark buildings nationwide, including Hainan Boao Forum for Asia, China Academy of Art, Yantai Sports Center Stadium, Qinhuangdao Stadium, Chongqing People's Mansion, Xinjiang Sports Center , the office building of the city government of Mianyang , Henan Sports Center Stadium and Xi'an International Finance and Trade Center .

BIAD has established good cooperative relations with many well-known foreign design corporations. The joint designs include the Head Office of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China , Beijing Shunyi International School , Shenzhen Cultural Center , China National Grand Theater, the Oriental Plaza and LG Mansion. At present, BIAD is cooperating with foreign companies on the projects of the National Indoor Stadium, Wukesong Cultural and Sports Center , the National Conference Center and Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport.

  Since China 's reform and opening-up, BIAD has been actively taking part in economic construction in cities around China , making contributions to the healthy development of the real estate industry. Every year BIAD undertakes many civil architectural design projects, and its total design area has amounted to 120 million square meters. Among its design projects, Beijing Handerson Center, the International Financial Mansion, Haidian Theater, the Investment Plaza, Beijing Media and Cultural Center and Xinyuan Mansion have become the new landmark buildings of Beijing; and some residential building complexes have exerted considerable influence on the real estate market, such as Wangjing New City, Beijing SOHO New Town, Vanke Star Garden, Beijing Orange County, Vanke West Mountain Courtyard, Deep Blue Houses, Yiyuan Houses, Lar Valley, and Huilongguan Residential Area.

  BIAD has always been devoting to top-quality design and technological leadership. From 1977 to 2006, BIAD has been awarded 28 national prizes for its designs, 171 awards by the Construction Ministry and 334 awards by Beijing Municipality. Its scientific researches have won 47 national prizes of scientific and technological progress, 68 prizes awarded by the Construction Ministry and 133 prizes by Beijing Municipality. Over the years, BIAD has built up an outstanding design team with a large number of excellent architects and engineers specialized in various fields, among whom there is one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 9 national design masters, 2 experts with outstanding contributions, 465 senior architects and senior engineers, 442 architects and engineers, 197 Class 1 certified architects, 127 Class 1 certified structural engineers, and 9 certified cost engineers.
